Using the Netflix Enhancer (nEnhancer) – Is it worth it?

I will be testing some Netflix plugins in the coming days, and share my thoughts about them here. Today I have tested the so-called Enhancer, or Netflix Enhancer, or nEnhancer… different names for the same plugin.

The Netflix Enhancer plugin is a plugin that will help you understand more about a movie before you start watching it. The most important function I have discovered is the way it shows you a movie’s rating at IMDb and SIMKL before you start watching it. You can also get easy access to the trailer of the movie you are interested in.

If you check out the image above, you can see the IMDb rating, the SIMKL rating, and you can also press the movie icon to watch the trailer.

This is useful, but it isn’t that useful. Besides this, Enhancer also adds a dashboard on their website where you can see news of new episodes. I didn’t find it very useful, but I got one major surprise… The fourth season of Cuckoo will air on August 3rd on BBC in England. Hopefully, it will get to Netflix as well quickly. This is one of my favorite TV series, and I have missed it for a very long time. But, now it seems to return, and that makes me very happy.

I guess the Netflix Enhancer plugin is useful for some things, but I will not become a frequent user of the plugin.

Feedback from the creator of nEnhancer

The creator of the plugin has since this article was published sent me a letter. Here you can see the content in which he says that no malware can be found in the plugin and that is shouldn’t slow down the browser. I have full faith in that what he says is true. Here is the full text.

“1. I would like to reassure you that the extension contains zero malware or anything like that. The code of the extension is open to anyone to examine in the Plugins folder of Chrome. There was only one complaint in the reviews from someone who was lying to make people believe that the extension had malware. Our goal at Simkl is to create the best TV tracking service without doing bad things for our community, we don’t spam, don’t use malware and don’t share user’s information with anyone.

2. While building the extension we made sure that our extension is working the fastest way possible without slowing down browser startup. We don’t use any frameworks or libraries and write our own code, which makes the extension very light. The extension also has the rule to start working only on the Netflix, Hulu and Crunchyroll websites, it does not activate on any other website (you can see the extension asking permissions for those domains when installing the extension and nothing else).”
