For The Old Guard, Netflix managed to get one of the biggest Hollywood hotshots at the moment Charlize Theron to play the role of the old guardian. After a few weeks, I finally had the time to watch the movie, and I have got to say that I ended up positively surprised.
Charlize Theron is currently the ninth highest paid actress in the world, meaning that Netflix had to dig quite deep to make her do this role. But, I guess they were smart to do so, because Charlize Theron is actually giving this movie a needed boost.
So, who is The Old Guard?
Charlize Theron plays the role of a person that cannot die. She has been alive for more than 1000 years, and she has since then discovered more people with the same gift. Now they are uniting to help solve trouble in the world and to fight against evil!
Charlize Theron is the oldest of the guards, but we also meet a brand new girl who has just discovered that she cannot be killed. Kiki Layne plays the role of Nile, a soldier in the army who gets her throat cut over. But, instead of dying, she stays alive. Her friends and fellow soldiers don’t like the thing, and so she has to disappear. This is when she meets Andy (Charlize Theron) and unites with the rest of the “guards.”
Chiwetel Ejiofor plays the role of Copley, a man arranging with a new assignment for the guards. But, instead of sending them in the right direction, they are taken advantage of and the guards turn into a research object of the crazy businessman Merrick (played by Harry Melling). Merrick just wants to do research in order to develop “eternal life” on earth and sell it for lots of money.
The Old Guard – Is it worth watching?
A wrote in the introduction that The Old Guard came as a positive surprise to me, and I still feel the same way. The movie reminded me of the introductury movies to Captain Marvel and many other superheroes. It goes quite slowly, but that is the way in which we can understand the concept. And based on the last scene of the movie, it can easily happen that we will see more movies in this series in the future.
The Old Guards are not really superheroes. In fact, they are more like normal people, except for the fact that they have learned a lot throughout the years, and thus, they are exceptionally good fighters. They can be shot and feel pain, but the wounds then start to heal. But, if they are captured, they do not have superpowers making them able to break chains, making them vulnerable for such actions.
All in all, The Old Guard is good action and way better than most action movies produced in this gender today. The story works out fine, and this is a movie I believe millions of people would have watched in the cinema. But, since it is included with our Netflix subscription, we all watch it in our homes instead. And that leads us to the next question; how to watch The Old Guard?
