The Secret Life of Pets is a fantastic movie, with above average ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and iMDB. On iMDB it has a rating 6,6/10, while it has a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is interesting to see that normally all movies have better ratings on iMDB than at Rotten Tomatoes, but with The Secret Life of Pets it is different.

“When the cat’s away, the mice will play” is a popular saying. What happens with our pets, once the owner leave the house? They start playing! But, with Katie and Max the story is different. Max is a dog who is completely addicted and dedicated to his owner Katie. But, Katie has to leave home to work and that leaves a big empty space hard to fill for the dog Max. One day as Katie returns, she has a big surprise to Max. Unfortunately the surprise is a bad one, a big dog that is to become his new playmate.
Max is not at all happy about the new mate, and considering that he is squeezed out from his comfort zone, makes things even worse. But, friends are best made during hardships, and once Max and the new dog is taken captive, they have to fight their way back home together, while the other pets in the neighborhood do their uttermost to get their friend Max back.
The story might not be very original, but the movie itself is fantastic for children who enjoy a tale with lots of animals in it, especially dogs.
The Secret Life of Pets had its theater premiere on July 8th in 2016. It was directed by Chris Renaud, the creator of Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2. In the original version of the movie you can also hear the voices of several famous actors such as Louis C.K., Eric Stonestreet, Kevin Hart, Ellie Kemper, Lake Bell, Jenny Slate, Bobby Moynihan, Hannibal Buress and Albert Brooks. If you have seen the trailer, you will probably really recognize the plot from Toy Story. It is very similar to the story of Woody, the favorite toy of his owner. One day he is accompanied by a new toy, Buzz Lightyear. They become enemies, but once they are sent away from home by a mistake, they have to cooperate in order to find their way back home.

The Secret Life of Pets was such a big success (it was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2016), that Universal Pictures has decided to continue the story in a sequel. Some sources say that the movie will be relased in July 2018, while others say that the movie will be released in July 2019. It sounds reasonable with a 2019 release, at least if we want the movie to be released with the same quality and precision as the original. It should also be mentioned that according to Wikipedia the sequel is set to be released on July 3rd in 2019.
